The DIY DMCA Takedown Guide
Your content is valuable : Whether it’s product images, marketing copy, videos, or even an entire website. If it’s been stolen, don’t worry. In many cases, you don’t need a lawyer to get infringing content removed.
Here’s the easiest do-it-yourself guide to filing a DMCA takedown request in just a few minutes.
Step 1: Copy the Two URLs
Before filing a DMCA request, you’ll need clear links as evidence. Open a notepad and copy both of the following:
Step 2: Use the Official Online Form (Fastest)
(Use social media reporting tools only when your content is stolen on a social platform.)
Step 3: Send a Proper DMCA Notice (If There’s No Form)
Subject: DMCA Takedown Request Form (DMCA-Compliant)
Copy from tab 2
Step 4: Escalate to the Hosting Provider (Most Effective for “Copied Websites”)
If the site ignores your notice or hides contact information, identify the hosting provider using a hosting checker or DNS lookup tool (such as https://hostingchecker.com/, https://www.who-hosts-this.com/, or ICANN RDAP: https://lookup.icann.org/). Hosting providers are typically the party that can remove or disable the infringing page when a valid DMCA notice is received. (copyright.gov)
Step 5: Track, Follow Up, and Know What Can Happen Next
Keep records of all notices sent and responses received. Follow up if you don’t hear back within a reasonable timeframe. Be prepared for a possible counter-notice from the infringing party, which may require further action. Monitor search results and the website to confirm the content has been removed.
